Patton Lane

Originally from Reno, Nevada, Patton is not only a talented tennis player—he is also one of the most academically driven recruits we have ever worked with. He wants to pursue a future in aerospace engineering and has extremely high expectations for his education. At the same time, tennis remains a major priority, and he wanted a college where he could continue developing, competing, and making an impact on a strong team.

Finding the right balance was not going to be easy.

There are only a limited number of universities offering the level of engineering education Patton was seeking, and an even smaller number where the tennis program, coaching philosophy, team culture, and academics would all align. This meant we had to be highly selective from the beginning.

Rather than contacting schools simply to create as many options as possible, we focused on a carefully chosen group of programs that genuinely matched Patton’s goals. Every school had to offer a strong academic pathway toward his future in aerospace engineering while also providing a competitive tennis environment where he could grow.

Patton had several excellent conversations with coaches and completed some very positive visits. Multiple universities presented strong opportunities, making the final decision a difficult one.

Eventually, however, one program separated itself from the rest: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana.

Rose-Hulman offered the challenging academic environment Patton wanted, along with a strong tennis program where he could continue pushing himself as an athlete. But what truly made the difference was the human connection.

The coach demonstrated tremendous effort and genuine passion throughout the recruiting process. He made Patton feel valued, welcomed, and confident about his future within the program. The attention and care shown by the coaching staff, players, and entire team made it clear that Rose-Hulman was not simply interested in Patton as a recruit—they believed in who he could become.

That level of commitment stood out.

Rose-Hulman will challenge Patton in every possible way. The academics are demanding, the tennis team is competitive, and successfully balancing both will require discipline, maturity, and an exceptional work ethic. But those are exactly the qualities that make Patton such a special recruit.

With its outstanding engineering education, strong tennis program, dedicated coach, and welcoming team culture, Rose-Hulman became the perfect fit.
